Shockwave Therapy for ED

What is ED?

Erectile dysfunction, or ED for short, is the inability to get or maintain an erection for sexual intercourse. It is not uncommon for men to experience ED every so often, but if you’re experiencing erectile dysfunction on a regular basis, that may be a sign of a more serious health problem causing ED in the first place.

Potential causes of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Increased age
  • Low testosterone (low T)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Diabetes
  • Digestive and kidney diseases
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship issues
  • Alcohol and drug abuse
  • Tobacco products
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Pelvic injuries
  • Prostate cancer
  • Cancer treatment

Due to the severity of some of these underlying causes, it is important to speak to a doctor about erectile dysfunction. PhysioMD’s men’s health clinic creates an environment where our patients are comfortable discussing these issues openly and honestly.

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a therapy that is often used to treat erectile dysfunction. Most erectile dysfunction treatments do not effectively treat one of its most common root causes: blockages in penile blood vessels. But shockwave therapy does.

Shockwave therapy uses low-intensity sound waves to break up these micro-plaque blockages in the blood vessels, clearing the way for unobstructed blood flow. It also breaks up older and weaker blood vessels, which the body will naturally repair and replace with newer, stronger vessels that will increase and improve blood flow.

Shockwave therapy can be used as a sexual enhancement therapy, too, making it a great option for anyone who wants to improve their overall sex life, regardless of erectile dysfunction.

Compared to other treatment options like Viagra or penile implant surgery, shockwave therapy is drug free, surgery free, and effective. This makes it an excellent option for patients who have tried other therapies to treat erectile dysfunction and have not found success, or for patients whose pre-existing conditions prevent them from taking Viagra or Cialis due to their side effects.

Shockwave therapy can be also used as a sexual enhancement therapy, so anyone who wants to improve their overall sex life and performance, regardless of whether or not they have erectile dysfunction, can make those improvements.

The risks of shockwave therapy are minimal, with virtually no side effects. Most of our patients are able to go home after a round of treatment without needing any downtime.

How effective is shockwave therapy for ED?

Shockwave therapy is a highly effective treatment option for ED.

It may take anywhere from 6 to 12 treatment sessions to see results, depending on the severity of the patient’s erectile dysfunction, but many of our patients have reported seeing improvements following their first or second treatment session of shockwave therapy.

A 2019 study showed that nearly 64% of ED patients who did not respond to oral medications like Cialis or Viagra were able to achieve an erection after undergoing shockwave therapy treatments. The level of this treatment’s effectiveness in this study depended on factors such as the patients’ age, how long they have been experiencing erectile dysfunction, other health issues, and lifestyle choices (i.e., whether or not a patient smoked cigarettes, regularly exercised, ate well, etc.).

Another study reported similar results, with 60% of erectile dysfunction patients giving positive responses regarding their shockwave therapy treatment results.

For men who have tried using Viagra or Cialis to treat their ED with no results, that 60 to 64% range of success shows a great deal of promise. Unlike these medications, shockwave therapy treats erectile dysfunction at the root cause — which is not something these oral medications are capable of doing! If artery blockages are causing your erectile dysfunction, you’re more likely to get rid of your ED for good with shockwave therapy.
